Many major cities and tourist areas accept credit cards. Just be wary of any international fees from your credit card company. However, we recommend carrying some cash with you for small purchases and taxis. We also recommend exchanging money at the airport.
Are ATMs available?
Yes, ATMs are widely available throughout the city.
What is the weather like in Santa Marta?
Temperatures are between 80-90° F (27-32° C) with humidity as high as 80%.
That being said, our wedding does take place later in the afternoon and by the beach, with fans around the venue. Hopefully you can feel the ocean breeze as you try to pat down your frizzy hair.
Is Santa Marta safe for tourists?
Yes, Santa Marta is a popular tourist destination. However, when visiting any city/country, be mindful of your surroundings and avoid secluded areas.
Is the water safe to drink?
Tap water is generally safe to drink in major cities.
But in Santa Marta, we recommend sticking to bottled or filtered water.
How can I get around Santa Marta?
Taxis are available from the airport and around town. You can also use Uber or inDrive (the local ride share app). Rides can cost between 10000 COP - 30000 COP ($3 USD - $8 USD). Unlike in the United States, you can negotiate the fare price. This can be done via the app, or in person if you want the taxi driver to laugh at your gringo Spanish.
Is there cell service?
Check with your provider. Depending on your plan, you may already get service in South America. Most providers also have international plans you can buy.
Another option is buying a SIM/eSIM.
Be aware that some of the further beaches and tourist attractions do not get cell service at all. They may provide wifi at a price.
What apps should I download?
We recommend Uber, inDrive, and Whatsapp.
Whatsapp is widely used in Colombia, with almost all businesses using it as a means for communication.
